HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter television series has announced another major casting addition, but the news has left fans with one big question. While there are a couple of additions to the upcoming show, fans are mostly fixated on Dobby.
For those unaware, BAFTA-winning actor Lenny Rush has been cast as Dobby, the beloved house-elf who is expected to make his debut as the series moves toward its second season.
While many fans are excited to see Rush join the Wizarding World, the casting announcement has also sparked plenty of discussion online. The biggest question among the fans is: how exactly will the new Harry Potter series bring Dobby to life?
In the original Warner Bros. movies, Dobby was a fully computer-generated character, also called CGI. Toby Jones was the voice behind the character while the actors on set performed scenes without another actor physically playing the character in front of them.
Rush’s casting has now led fans to wonder whether HBO could take a different approach.
@Thunderbird___5 shared his surprise and wrote, “Not a CGI creature ???” Another X user @khrukhrukhru had similar sentiments and he wrote, “Live action dobby?”
@tinivule added, “Yes, lets hope they use makeup and puppetry and not resort to a full CGI character.”
@furlan_mai66776 also wrote, “They are using a real actor for Dobby. I’m so happy for him!”
@FandomAnxiety was just happy as other fans, and wrote, “Wait, does this mean that Dobby is going to be an actual practical actor instead of just CGI, a dummy, and a voice actor?
However, it remains unclear whether he will physically perform the role using motion capture, prosthetics, or another technique, or whether he will simply provide Dobby’s voice while visual effects artists create the character separately.
Other Harry Potter TV show casting updates continue to take shape
HBO has not yet revealed exactly how Dobby will be created for the television series. However, Rush’s casting was part of a larger group of reported additions as work continues on the show’s future seasons.
Billy Barratt, known for Invasion, has also joined the ensemble as the young Tom Riddle. The character is expected to play an important part in the Chamber of Secrets storyline. He will appear through the mysterious diary connected to the future Lord Voldemort.
The series has also reportedly made a change to the role of Ginny Weasley. Bonnie Hill is set to take over the character from Season 2. She replaces Gracie Cochrane after the first season. Ginny has a much larger role in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
For now, though, Dobby remains the biggest talking point. Until HBO reveals how the character will actually appear on screen, fans will have to keep guessing about what Rush’s performance will look like.
