A celebrity’s self-parody always tries to pass itself off as vandalism.
The star rips down the positive image built up around them, shows how vain it all was, and proves they can take a joke. Usually, however, self-parody is renovation.
In Apple TV’s Brothers, Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson play exaggerated versions of themselves, whose bond is threatened by the possibility that they have the same father.
Their public personas fit the sitcom mold perfectly. Matthew is the philosophical family man, while Woody is the agent of chaos who sees other people’s routines as mere suggestions.
The show is successful precisely because we know these guys, or at least think we do. That distinction is what makes Brothers more interesting than it has the right to be.
We are not just observing their personas. We helped create them by remembering certain interviews, talk-show chats, and performances, while discarding everything that didn’t fit.
The show, then, sells our own assumptions back to us.
Playing Yourself Has Become Its Own Genre
Celebs have been using public images as raw material for decades. I do not mean the usual cameos wherein actors receive applause and leave after making a joke about being famous.
The more interesting version asks celebs to play the person audiences already think they know. Their name is real, but everything else occupies the space between confession and performance.
Curb Your Enthusiasm remains an obvious example. Larry David turned into one of TV’s great social monsters, a man who identifies an unreasonable rule and then challenges it in the most unreasonable manner possible.
What makes the performance work is its willingness to become genuinely unflattering. The fictional Larry is not merely eccentric in an adorable, marketable way. He is petty and selfish.
Matt LeBlanc’s Episodes took a similar approach. Its version of LeBlanc is vain and manipulative, and aware that no amount of later success may separate him from Joey Tribbiani.
The Trip found something sadder beneath Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon’s comic rivalry. Their impressions are amusing, but their constant need to outperform each other exposes insecurity.
The best way to locate the insecurity underneath the image is to press until the joke begins to hurt, and not merely remind me of what I already know about a star.
Brothers Makes Matthew and Woody Too Easy to Love
Brothers has enough material to do something similarly uncomfortable.
McConaughey has spent years presenting himself as a man who escaped Hollywood superficiality through family and faith.

Harrelson’s public persona is much less orderly. He seems to move through life by instinct, confident somebody will eventually offer him room in their life.
I enjoy that contrast on the show. McConaughey and Harrelson have such natural chemistry that even their arguments feel like conversations these men might continue having after the cameras stop rolling.
But their fictional flaws are suspiciously flattering.
Matthew is self-serious, yet responsible and devoted to his family. Woody is intrusive, but he is also so warm that nobody can remain angry with him.
Neither portrayal threatens the affection audiences already have for these actors. I kept waiting for Brothers to make one of them genuinely difficult to like. It never really does.
Admitting to an amusing flaw does not mean much when that flaw is already part of what people find charming about you.
Once a celebrity makes the joke first, the criticism loses some of its force.
Self-parody can therefore function as an inoculation. The star introduces a weakened version of the criticism, laughs at it, and becomes harder to wound with the real thing later.
The Real Matthew and Woody Remain Safely Offscreen
The question of whether McConaughey and Harrelson might share a biological father gives Brothers something unusually personal to explore.
Both have publicly discussed the actual possibility.
That uncertainty carries real emotional weight. It involves their parents, their childhoods, and McConaughey’s relationship with the man he grew up believing was his father.
Yet the show turns that intimate question into an engine of entertainment. It brings us close enough to feel invited into something private without requiring its stars to reveal much at all.
A DNA test might provide an answer, but the ambiguity has already proved more useful. It has generated headlines and now an eight-episode Apple TV comedy.
I do not think McConaughey and Harrelson owe the public a test.
That is an intensely personal decision, and the result could alter how one or both men understand their families.
However, Brothers cannot build themselves around their apparent openness and expect me not to notice how controlled that openness remains.
Both actors are executive producers, which means they help decide how foolish their fictional selves can appear and where the boundary between performance and privacy lies.
They surrender their dignity in carefully measured portions. We are allowed to laugh at them, but only within limits they helped establish.
Their friendship is the one element that never feels manufactured. The affection between them is obvious, and their long familiarity gives their quarrels a rhythm no screenplay could create on its own.
That relationship also makes the biological mystery feel strangely unnecessary. McConaughey and Harrelson already behave like family, regardless of what a DNA test might reveal.
I wish Brothers explored that chosen bond instead of settling for familiar versions of its stars. Playing yourself only matters when you reveal what your public persona conceals.
Instead, we get them as we largely imagine them. I enjoyed spending time with both, mind you, but I am not convinced I know either of them any better, you know?
Do you think celebrity self-parody reveals anything real? Which actor has played the most memorable version of themselves? Let me know in the comments.
You can stream Brothers on Apple TV.
