Randy Edelman & Tony Orlando: Celestial Spheres of Music By Lorraine Silvetz

The Legendary TV & Film composer, Randy Edelman performed at the oldest theatre on Long Island, The Bellmore Movie and Showcase. The show was particularly powerful since the musician who had discovered Randy, in his youth, joined him onstage for their first, in person, meeting in 50 years! The man who recognized the budding genius, many moons ago, was none other than the legendary singer, Tony Orlando.

Tony came onstage and shared the tale of how he and Randy had met before Randy had entered college. Tony was a young record executive with the late, great Clive Davis’ label. Orlando who clearly had an eye and ear for talent told Randy finish your education then come and see me. Orlando kept his word and signed Randy as a songwriter before he had even composed a song.  There are people that come into our lives at a pivotal moment; catalysts,  who through their guidance and faith in you can change the trajectory of your life. Tony was that person launching Randy in what has been a most illustrious career.

Both artists have been blessed with great success. Orlando is best known for his show Tony Orlando & Dawn with their many hits including “Knock Three Times”, “Candida”, and “Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree” a major hit, holding number-one spot on both U.S. and U.K. charts for four consecutive weeks, reaching top 10 in 10 countries and best selling single of 1973 on both sides of the Atlantic. Add that it was named 37th biggest song of all time in Billboard’s 50th-anniversary retrospective of the Hot 100.

Edelman’s career has been no less spectacular. He is considered one of the greatest film composers of his time, scoring The Last of the Mohicans, Gettysburg, Dragonheart, Kindergarten Cop, My Cousin Vinny, Ghostbusters II, and Billy Madison, and writing the instantly recognizable theme to MacGyver along with more than a hundred other television and music themes for the Olympics, ESPN, HBO, and beyond. His songs were sung by world famous singers Barry Manilow, Dionne Warwick, Olivia Newton-John, the Carpenters, and Blood, Sweat & Tears — including Manilow’s “Weekend in New England,” a timeless ballad.

Bringing together these great artists for an onstage reunion, after 50 years, framed Randy’s performance poetically. The evening described a shared legacy of artistry that not only shaped their lives but the millions who have been privileged to hear it.

Edelman’s performance was both inspirational snd heartwarming. He effortlessly wove anecdotes between his musical works making it feel like you were not just an audience member but sharing a comversation with a beloved friend.

They often say that with true friendship no amount of time spent apart can lessen the connection. Notably, this was the case here. The love and camraderie between Randy and Tony was palpable as they casually sang, spoke and joked while reminiscing on their illustrious careers.

During their onstage repartee Tony asked Randy how he composes music for films. He said, “How do you do that?  Adding “That is the genius!” Randy answered that he views the film scene and then scores the emotion of the scene. He has an extraordinary breath of film work – over 100 films to date. Clearly, Randy is in close touch with the God of Music, Apollo, himself, since his inspiration knows no bounds. We are most grateful that he is since he has touched the lives of so many with the gift of his incredible compositions. Many audience members recognize his music but never knew he was the genius behind it. This night the audience got to know the composer behind a sweeping array of magnificent works and his legendary friend who believed in him before he even knew the celestial spheres of music he would reach.
