If there’s one denim trend that seems to defy the seasonal shuffle, it’s cropped jeans.
Whether an ankle-grazing skinny cut or a wide-leg silhouette that hovers just above the ankle, this wardrobe staple has earned a permanent spot in the fashion set’s rotation. As someone who lives in cropped jeans year-round—switching between lighter washes for summer and raw hems for winter—I’ve come to realise that the right pair of shoes can make or break the look.
The perfect shoe not only completes an outfit but sets the tone—no matter if you’re aiming for effortless French-girl style or laid-back cool. And with runway shows continuing to serve us impeccable denim and shoe combinations, now feels like the right time to share which shoes truly complement cropped jeans best.
Take, for example, The Row’s autumn/winter 2024 show, where minimalist ballet flats were styled with slightly flared cropped denim. The juxtaposition of the typically “feminine” flat with the casual feel of cropped jeans was a standout moment that inspired me to rethink how I style my cropped jeans. Whilst I lean towards trainers for a more off-duty vibe, my fellow editors are devoted to the timeless appeal of loafers—especially when paired with cropped straight-leg jeans. From kitten heels at Miu Miu to classic pumps à la Carrie Bradshaw, certain footwear works beautifully with this hemline.
Beyond aesthetics, there’s also a practical element at play. Cropped jeans, by nature, frame the ankle, making them the perfect canvas for shoes that command attention. Whether you prefer sleek, polished options or something more laid-back and streetwear-inspired, the key is balance. Each shoe style lends itself to different styling possibilities; chinky trainers add a bit of an edge whilst a low heel imparts elegance.
Below, I’ve rounded up six key shoe styles that work well with cropped jeans. There are both designer and high-street options, so there’s something for everyone. You’ll never have to stress over which shoes to wear with your cropped jeans again.
Shop My Favourite Shoes to Wear With Cropped Jeans:
1. Ballet Flats
Style Notes: Few shoe trends have experienced as much of a revival recently as ballet flats. Thanks to fashion’s obsession with quiet luxury, ballet flats are everywhere—from the streets of Paris to the Instagram feeds of the most stylish editors. Their dainty profile pairs beautifully with cropped jeans, offering a delicate touch that balances out the denim’s more casual feel. Opt for pointed-toe styles for a more elevated vibe, or stick with classic round-toe versions for a true Parisian aesthetic. To avoid looking too prim, I love pairing mine with slightly distressed or frayed-hem jeans. Throw on a boxy blazer, and you’re good to go.

2. Trainers
Style Notes: When it comes to casual style, trainers are my go-to with cropped jeans. They add a cool, effortless feel and work well whether you’re running errands or meeting friends for coffee. Streetwear-inspired silhouettes with a retro aesthetic are especially popular this season, but stick to classic white trainers for a timeless look, or experiment with new designs for something trendier. For a sport-luxe twist, pair your trainers with cropped, raw-hem jeans and an oversized coat.

3. Kitten Heels
Style Notes: Fashion fully embraced kitten heels last year, and it’s easy to see why. They’re the perfect balance of chic and comfort, making them ideal for when you want to elevate your look without committing to towering stilettos. Cropped jeans allow the dainty heel to take centre stage—the ideal shoe solution for a smart-casual evening outfit. Pair yours with cropped straight-leg jeans and a tucked-in blouse for an office-appropriate look. On weekends, try them with a graphic tee and a statement belt for a cool-girl edge.

4. Loafers
Style Notes: Loafers have been so popular of late, and I put it down to their ability to be styled in so many ways. Whether you prefer chunky soles or sleek, slim designs, they add a polished finish to cropped jeans without feeling overly formal. Choose platform loafers for an edgy twist or stick with classic penny loafers for a more timeless vibe. I love wearing mine with cropped wide-leg jeans and a cosy knit for a relaxed yet refined feel.

G.H Bass
Weejuns Penny Loafers
G.H.Bass loafers are a must in any fashion lover’s wardrobe.

5. Pointed-Toe Court Shoes
Style Notes: No shoe style embodies chic quite like pointed-toe court shoes. Whether you opt for a bold colour or a sleek neutral, tall heels elevate cropped jeans in a way that feels both timeless and fashion-forward. Match a vibrant pair with dark-wash jeans for a pop of colour, or go monochrome with nude, black or deep-hued pumps for a more streamlined look. Finish with a tailored blazer for a sophisticated outfit.

6. Ankle Boots
Style Notes: Boots with cropped jeans is a no-brainer, especially when transitioning between seasons. Whether you wear sleek sock boots for a streamlined finish, or chunky combat boots for a tougher edge, cropped jeans let your boots do the talking. For a classic look, style slim-fitting ankle boots with a straight-leg pair and a wool coat, or if you’re going for something more casual, opt for thick-soled lace-ups or Chelsea boots and a leather jacket.
