Seth Rogen revealed during his latest appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! that he kept thanking Penélope Cruz during their intimate scene for The Invite. Notably, Ike Barinholtz is serving as one of the guest hosts of the ABC late-night talk show during Kimmel’s current absence.
Seth Rogen on being afraid of Javier Bardem during romantic scenes with Penélope Cruz
Rogen appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! to promote The Invite. Barinholtz noted that he had seen the film, adding that he “loved” it and saying it was his “favorite movie of the year.” He joked that the movie made him “horny” and brought up Rogen’s “very sexy scenes” with Cruz. Sticking with the joke, Barinholtz asked whether Rogen had been concerned that Cruz’s real-life husband, Javier Bardem, might “kill” him.
Keeping the joke going, Rogen responded, “Yes, so you’re very worried about that” before adding, “But what’s actually funny in this scene we were encouraged to improvise.” He revealed that during a “romantically charged” scene, he kept saying “thank you” to Cruz. The Fabelmans actor continued, “And Olivia Wilde, the director, was just like, ‘Why do you keep thanking her? What are you doing? Why do you keep saying thank you?’”
Rogen recalled that he responded by saying that he didn’t know. He elaborated, “I was like, ‘It’s just what’s coming out of my mouth. All I have is gratitude for this. And I would just thank her. I would be apologetic and thankful.”
When Barinholtz humorously assured Rogen that Bardem is “cool with that,” the latter quipped, “I don’t think he views me as a legitimate threat.”
Olivia Wilde directed The Invite from a script by Will McCormack and Rashida Jones, who developed it as an English-language remake of Spanish filmmaker Cesc Gay’s The People Upstairs. Besides Rogen and Cruz, the cast includes Edward Norton and Wilde. The Invite is currently in theaters.
