We’re still waiting on that announcement for production to begin on HBO’s adaptation of The Last of Us, but at least we know where filming will take place. After filming the hit first season in Calgary, Alberta, Canada back in 2021, CBC News reports that for season 2, production on the series will move west to Vancouver, British Columbia.
For horror fans, Vancouver is no stranger. The city was home to the majority of the production for “The X-Files” and “Millennium” from Chris Carter, Freddy Vs. Jason, The Cabin in The Woods, and more recently had David Leitch‘s Deadpool 2.
The move also confirms what we’ve already been told by series developer Craig Mazin and executive producer Neil Druckmann regarding the second season of the show focusing on The Last of Us Part 2. For those not in the know, the sequel takes place in Seattle, Washington, which is easily substituted by Vancouver for productions.
While HBO confirmed production is moving to Vancouver, according to the Alberta government, part of the second season will still be filmed in Alberta.
Once again, despite the announcement of production location, we still don’t know when production will actually begin. In a recent interview, star Bella Ramsey (who plays Ellie in the adaptation) speculates that the series will start shooting by the end of the year, with the second season finally arriving “probably by the end of 2024, early 2025.”
In addition to Ramsey, Pedro Pascal (“The Mandalorian”) stars as Joel in the adaptation of the award-winning video game, which is currently streaming on HBO Max.
