Last night (February 16), McCartney closed out the special 50th anniversary episode of SNL with a medley performance that marked his fifth time performing as a musical guest on the long-running sketch comedy show. It was his first time performing on the show since 2012.
For his performance, McCartney played three songs from The Beatles‘ iconic ‘Abbey Road’ record: ‘Golden Slumbers’, ‘Carry That Weight’ and ‘The End’.
McCartney kicked off the medley on piano for ‘Golden Slumbers’ before segueing into ‘Carry That Weight’. To close out the show, aptly with ‘The End’, McCartney hopped on a bench with his electric guitar as the audience clapped along.

Prior to last night’s performance, McCartney had performed on the show four other times: 1980, 1993, 2010 and 2012. He had also made cameos in SNL episodes in 2006, 2013 and 2015.
Elsewhere during the show, the likes of Miley Cyrus, Lil Wayne and more performed throughout the anniversary episode. Sabrina Carpenter and Paul Simon kicked off the show with ‘Homeward Bound’, which the latter had performed on the show with George Harrison in 1976.
McCartney’s medley brought a close to a music-filled weekend for SNL, which had its own 50th anniversary concert that saw the remaining members of Nirvana reunite with Post Malone on vocal duties.
Elsewhere, David Byrne joined Robyn for a rendition of ‘Dancing On My Own’, Jack White covered Neil Young and more.
At the final show of McCartney’s ‘Got Back’ 2024 tour at London’s O2 in December, he was joined onstage by his former Beatles bandmate Ringo Starr and The Rolling Stones’ Ronnie Wood.
In other news, Paul McCartney recently teased that he hoped to finish a new solo album in 2025. “I’ve been working on a lot of songs, and have had to put it to the side because of the tour,” he explained. “So, I’m hoping to get back into that and finish up a lot of these songs. So, how’s about that? ‘My New Year’s resolution is to finish a new album!’”
Meanwhile, the musician has said that proposed changes to copyright law would allow AI to rip off artists and result in a “loss of creativity”. His stance on the situation has since been backed by Elton John.
