Gordon Ramsay has shared that he’s “lucky to be here” after suffering a “really bad” bicycle accident this week, and is crediting his helmet for saving his life.
Speaking about the incident in an Instagram video posted Saturday, Ramsay revealed that the accident “really shook” him, but he’s feeling grateful that it wasn’t worse. “Honestly, I’m lucky to be here,” he said. “Those incredible trauma surgeons, doctors, nurses, and the hospital that looked after me this week, they were amazing. But, honestly, you’ve got to wear a helmet. I don’t care how short the journey is… they’re crucial.”
At one point, Ramsay lifted his white chef’s jacket to reveal a large, gnarly bruise on the left side of his body. Additionally, along with his statement, he also shared “before” and “after” pictures of his helmet from the accident, demonstrating just how serious it was.
“Now, I’m lucky to be standing here — I’m in pain, it’s been a brutal week, and I’m sort of getting through it — but, I cannot tell you the importance of wearing a helmet,” he said. “I’m thankful for all the doctors, nurses and staff at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital in New London who looked after me and checked me out, but most thankful for my helmet that saved my life.”
In the caption, Ramsay directed his statement to fathers in light of Father’s Day, telling “all the dads out there” to “WEAR A HELMET!” He also confirmed that he has no broken bones from his accident, and is “doing ok” other than “looking like a purple potato” from the bruises. Meanwhile, the second season of Ramsay’s show Food Stars premiered last month, with new co-host, Lisa Vanderpump.
