Stranger Things Creators Admit to Forgetting Will’s Birthday in Season

Fans of Netflix’s Stranger Things have noticed that in the recently released fourth season, the characters in the series seem to have forgotten Will Byers’ birthday. Speaking to Variety, The Duffer Brothers revealed that not only did the characters forget, but they did as well.

During one particular shot in the series’ fourth season, a camera overlay reveals that it is March 22, which was established as Will’s birthday earlier in the series. When asked if the miscue was intentional or simply an error, Matt Duffer said that they also forgot that Will’s birthday was supposed to be that day.

“The honest response is, clearly like the characters in the show, we also forgot about Will’s birthday. So the debate now is whether we adjust Will’s birthday or we just let it be really sad,” Matt said.

Ross Duffer then chimed in to mention that it was six years ago that they created his date, before Matt joked that the brotherly duo needed someone to come in and help them keep track of everything that they’ve created.

“You know how George R.R. Martin has somebody — I mean, his story is more vast — and Stephen King has someone who just keeps track of this stuff? We need that,” said Matt. “We don’t have that. So Ross and I, and my memory’s not great, but we love Will, and I don’t want people to think we don’t love Will because we forgot — we do! But now we mentioned Dustin’s birthday this season, so we’re being very careful for people not to forget, in case the timeline … ”

Recently, Stranger Things season 4 set a record for Netflix, having been viewed for more than 287 million hours during the week of May 23-30. That’s not only good enough for the top spot of the week for Netflix, but it’s also more than enough to break the record for the streaming platform’s biggest-ever premiere weekend for an English-language series, which was previously held by Season 2 of Bridgerton (193m hours).
