Two roommates set out to make some serious dough to avoid being evicted after one poor decision—one of them gave their rent to her sleazy boyfriend with a huge dick, who went and invested the money in a line of T-shirts—in One of Them Days, a funny urban comedy that I expect will become a cult classic in time.
Keke Palmer and SZA star in what can best be described as a modern, female-led version of Friday, with most of its humor derived from the colorful characters dotting their surroundings. It’s been a while since I’ve seen a quality Black-led comedy like this; it hits many of the right notes.
It helps that Palmer and SZA make for an entertaining odd couple. They have great chemistry even if their characters couldn’t be more different; the pairing makes for great material. Throw in the likes of Aziza Scott (who plays nemesis Berniece) and Maude Apatow (the token white girl), there is plenty to fill the film’s graciously short 95-minute runtime.
One of Them Days isn’t the next Girls Trip, though. More silly than hysterically funny, it’s a lot of fun—but no comedy epic. There’s nothing wrong with that, of course, but don’t expect to be laughing throughout.
An entertaining, light, and amusing comedy, One of Them Days is worth the price of admission and a romp through the neighborhood—-and even if it isn’t the funniest movie ever made, expect it to grow in popularity over time.
