Matilda Star Alisha Weir Joins Universal’s Monster Movie From Scream

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Matilda: The Musical star Alisha Weir has been tapped to star opposite Melissa Barrera in Universal Pictures’ untitled monster movie, which hails from Scream VI directing duo Radio Silence. This marks the young Irish actress’ latest major project since leading last year’s Netflix adaptation of Matilda. She will also next be seen in the upcoming comedy Wicked Little Letters with Olivia Colman and Jessie Buckley.

Who’s Involved in the Untitled Monster Movie?

The untitled movie will be directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (Ready or Not, Scream films) from a screenplay written by Stephen Shields with revisions by Guy Busick. It is produced by William Sherak, Paul Neinstein, and James Vanderbilt for Project X Entertainment along with Radio Silence’s Chad Villella.

Further details about the project’s characters and plot are still being kept under wraps. However, the untitled monster movie was initially titled as Dracula’s Daughter. The story is expected to revolve around a group of kidnappers who abduct a band of young people, one of whom ends up being the titular character.

Universal Pictures intends to give the project the same treatment as their recent modern remakes of classic monster movies including Leigh Whannell’s The Invisible Man and Chris McKay’s supernatural horror comedy film Renfield. The studio plans to deliver “a unique take on legendary monster lore and will represent a fresh, new direction for how to celebrate these classic characters.”

The untitled movie will be part of Universal’s growing list of upcoming monster projects, including Elizabeth Banks’ Invisible Woman, Matt Stawki’s Monster Mash, the Ryan Gosling-led Wolfman film, David Keopp’s long-in-development The Bride of Frankenstein reboot, Josh Cooley’s Little Monsters film, Blumhouse’s The Thing adaptation, the James Wan-produced Van Helsing movie, an untitled monster thriller from Phil Lord and Chris Miller, and Chloe Zhao’s sci-fi Western Dracula movie.
