Galaxy Quest TV Series in the Works at Paramount+

A Galaxy Quest TV series is in development at Paramount+ based on the 1999 cult classic sci-fi comedy movie, according to a recent report from The Hollywood Reporter.

The project, which is still in the early development stages, will be produced by Mark Johnson, who was an executive producer on Breaking Bad, as well as the producer on the 1988 classic film Rain Man. According to the report, the people behind the upcoming Galaxy Quest TV series are still searching for a writer to pair with Johnson.

A Galaxy Quest TV series has been rumored to be in the works for some time, with Paramount TV Studios originally looking to make one in 2015. That version of the project was eventually sold to Amazon and came from the writer of the original film, Robert Gordon. However, the project eventually fizzled out, never making it past the development stages.

Paul Scheer would eventually take over writing the script for a series from Gordon, but plans were put on further hold following the death of actor Alan Rickman, who starred in the original film.

Originally released in 1999, Galaxy Quest was both a parody and homage to the world of science-fiction films and series, especially Star Trek. The film followed the cast of a fictional cult television series, Galaxy Quest, as they’re actually transported into an interstellar conflict against actual aliens. The film starred Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman, Tony Shalhoub, Sam Rockwell, and Daryl Mitchell.
