Avatar: The Way of the Water Image Shows the Return

A new image from the highly anticipated upcoming sequel Avatar: The Way of the Water was released today, showcasing Stephen Lang’s Miles Quaritch as an Avatar.

The new image shows Lang’s Quaritch overlooking what seems to be a research center, with human co-workers surrounding him and working. While fans knew for some time that Quaritch would return in the sequel, doing so in the body of a Na’vi comes as a bit of a surprise, given his view of the alien race in the original film.

When fans last saw Lang in the original Avatar, it seemed as if the character — who was the main antagonist of the film — had died in a battle on the Tree of Souls. However, Lang’s Quaritch will return in The Way of the Water, and now, it seems as if we know exactly how he’s returning.

Speaking to Empire Magazine alongside the image, Lang revealed that not only is Quaritch back, but he’s even angrier than he was in the first film. “He’s bigger, he’s bluer, he’s pissed off,” Lang said. “But there may possibly be an aspect of humility. When you take two Na’vi arrows in the chest, that’s gonna have some kind of effect on you.”

A whole new body for Lang also means that he’ll have the ability to do much more, with the actor noting that you’ll see some new cunning moves as a Na’vi. “[He] was always a character who moved in straight lines and at right angles,” said Lang. “But now he is as lithe as they come. He can move with the same kind of cunning and feral quality that any of the Na’vi can.”
