Anna Kendrick to Direct & Star in True Crime Thriller

Anna Kendrick is set to make her directorial debut with the upcoming true crime thriller The Dating Game, according to a recent report from Deadline.

Aside from directing, Kendrick will also star in and produce the film, which stems from a script from Ian MacAllister McDonald and is based on the true story Cheryl Bradshaw, a contestant on the 80s TV matchmaking show The Dating Game.

During her episode, she chose bachelor Rodney Alcala, but ended up not going on a date with the man, who later was found out to be a serial killer.

“I’ve loved this script from the moment I read it,” Kendrick said. “And while I was obviously thrilled to be playing the character of [Cheryl], I felt so connected to the story, the tone, and the themes around gender and intimacy, that when the opportunity came up to direct the film, I jumped at it. It feels meant to be. The support I’ve received already from Stuart Ford and everyone at AGC, Vertigo, and BoulderLight has been inspiring and empowering.”

Currently, no other cast members have been announced for the upcoming film, although the film is currently set to enter principal photography in late October, so more casting information should be coming soon.

For Kendrick, this will mark her first official job behind the camera, but will continue her work in front of it as well. Her next film, Alice, Darling, is currently set to have its premiere at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival later this month.
