If you’ve been waiting for a darkly comedic whodunnit this summer, your wait is almost up. A24’s Medusa Deluxe is coming to theaters near you on August 11. The British mystery takes place backstage at a hairdressing competition and is about to be your new favorite thing. Let’s dive in, shall we?
Talented, ambitious, and backstabbing hairstylists gather for a competition in England, only to find one of their own murdered before judging can begin. Winding through neon-lit halls and backstage dressing rooms, competitors unspool long-simmering resentments and secrets as they search for the killer among them, in this devilishly funny whodunit from debut filmmaker Thomas Hardiman.
Medusa Deluxe was written and directed by Thomas Hardiman. It stars Anita-Joy Uwajeh, Clare Perkins, Darrell D’Silva, Debris Stevenson, Harriet Webb, Heider Ali, Kae Alexander, Kayla Meikle, Lilit Lesser, Luke Pasqualino, and Nicholas Karimi.
This is Hardiman’s first feature. However, Hardiman has a plethora of shorts dating back to 2012 if you want to get to know his work before Medusa Deluxe premieres.
Dread‘s Editor-In-Chief, Mary Beth McAndrews, had lots of kind words for the film in her review but specifically highlighted the cinematography.
She wrote, “The biggest achievement of Medusa Deluxe is its cinematography. Ryan’s single take is incredibly impressive, creatively finding ways to shift character POV without edits. Filming Medusa Deluxe as if it’s in real-time does add to the mystery’s tension as we follow our cast of characters breathlessly delivering gossip across dressing rooms. Then, once we’ve acclimated to the film’s pacing, there’s a time jump achieved via the single take. It’s perhaps one of the single most impressive technical feats I’ve seen in a while.”
