‘Something In The Dirt’ Teaser: Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead

Benson and Moorhead have done it again.

Something In The Dirt

Directors Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead create a special brand of horror. Their works, from Resolution and The Endless to the bigger budget Synchronic, are fascinating examinations of cosmic horror that are grounded in very real human emotions. Their works are tender yet unsettling. Marvel recognized their talents and brought the duo on for the series Moon Knight, which marked a new chapter for the filmmakers. But, thankfully, with their new sci-fi-horror film Something In The Dirt, Benson and Moorhead are going back to their genre roots.

In the film:

Two new neighbors witness what seems to be a supernatural event in one of their apartments. At first terrified, they realize that documenting this phenomenon could provide them the lives they’ve always dreamed of.

Something In The Dirt was made during the pandemic, which had the team going back to their DIY beginnings for production. Moorhead told EW, who exclusively debuted the trailer, “Production-wise, we had a remote art team that was masked-up and dropping all off our stuff. Physically on-set was me, Justin, and Dave Lawson, our producer.”

Benson went on to tell EW about their desire to create a sense of cosmic dread. He said:

“That’s something that’s consistent in all of our movies. It’s the small target we’re always trying to hit — getting the audience the thrill of the feeling of unease and dread. This one probably has a much bigger dark-comedy component than the other four features. [But] they all deal to some extent with cosmic dread.

In her review out of Sundance, Dread Central’s editor-in-chief Mary Beth McAndrews said:

Something In The Dirt has an immaculate vibe, a perfect blend of mind-boggling cosmic horror and intimate character portraits. It may not be straightforward, but that’s the beauty of it… This is Benson and Moorhead at their best, creating a genre film filled with tenderness and intimacy.

Something In The Dirt comes to theaters on November 4, 2022.
