Todd Martin 02/11/2023 Film Reviews

SYNOPSIS:

A robotic Santa Claus goes on a killing spree in a small town on Christmas Eve.

REVIEW:

One of the things that has always terrified me is robots. I’m not sure why (though I suspect it’s because I watched Deadly Friend when I was younger), but robots have always creeped me out and to this day I am still freaked out by them. As such, I went into Christmas Bloody Christmas with high hopes because I thought it sounded cool and was hoping that it would give me something new to have nightmares about. I ended up enjoying it quite a bit and thought that it was a fun little film that was definitely influenced by the awesome slasher flicks of the 80s.

The premise is simple, but it works. Basically, we have a malfunctioning robot dressed like Santa Claus running around with an axe and other weapons slaughtering anyone unlucky enough to cross its path. What’s cool-and creepy-about robo-Santa is that it doesn’t have any motive and is just an unstoppable killing machine that kills just to kill. It can’t be reasoned with-which is terrifying in my opinion-and seems to exist just to kill. To make things worse, it is indestructible and as such it is nearly impossible to stop it. I always thought that the robot Santa from Futurama (voiced by the always cool John Goodman) was creepy in its own way, but it has nothing on the killer Santa from this movie.

One of the biggest strengths of the movie is the characters. They are well-written and come off as realistic and likable. I really dug the heroine Tori (played perfectly by Riley Dandy) as she is just a fun character in general and you can’t help but root for her. Her interactions with Robbie (Sam Delich, who does an awesome job as well) and funny and believable, and their conversations work because they sound like real conversations that real people have. The dialogue just works in general, and I must commend writer/director Joe Begos as he is a very talented writer who obviously knows horror. The rest of the cast is just as great, and I can’t think of a single character that didn’t work here.

The death scenes work here as well. Robo Santa isn’t fooling around and takes his work seriously. I thought that the movie had an impressive body count, and most of the death scenes are fun. Santa is a brutal killer here, and it was awesome seeing him going to town and doing what he was (kind of) created for. The antagonist here is a nice combination of the robot from The Terminator and the killer from Silent Night, Deadly Night, and I had a blast sitting back and watching him take out his hapless victims left and right. There’s just something about him that is creepy as hell, and I appreciate the fact that he gave me the wiggins.

I really dug Christmas Bloody Christmas and think that it is one of the best horror-related Christmas movies I have seen in a long time. I think that Begos did a great job here and I am even willing to go so far as to say that this movie is destined to become a classic Christmas horror film along the lines of the previously mentioned Silent Night, Deadly Night and the original Black Christmas. I can even see it becoming a franchise, which is fine because if Begos does what did this time around, I wouldn’t mind seeing a number of sequels in the coming years. Check it out when you get a chance-especially now during the holiday season-as it really is something quite special.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I think I’ll go make sure the doors and windows are locked and the chimney and fireplace is boarded up because this is definitely one Santa Claus that I don’t want a visit from this Christmas…
