Godzilla 4K UHD from Criterion
Godzilla will celebrate its 70th anniversary in style, as The Criterion Collection is bringing Toho’s 1954 Japanese kaiju classic to 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray on November 5.
The film has been newly restored in 4K with uncompressed monaural sound. A high-definition restoration of Terry Morse’s 1956 American reworking of the film, Godzilla, King of the Monsters, is also included.
Ishirō Honda directs from a script he co-wrote with Takeo Murata. Eiji Tsuburaya (Ultraman) helmed the special effects. Akira Takarada, Momoko Kōchi, Akihiko Hirata, and Takashi Shimura star with Haruo Nakajima and Katsumi Tezuka as Godzilla.
Special features include: commentary by film historian David Kalat; interviews with Takarada, Nakajima, special effects technicians Yoshio Irie and Eizo Kaimai, composer Akira Ifukube and Japanese film critic Tadao Sato; Godzilla’s photographic effects featurette; and more.
Goosebumps Figures from Trick or Treat Studios
Collectors beware, you’re in for a scare with Trick or Treat Studios’ Goosebumps action figures. Due out in December/January, the set of five is available to pre-order for $125 with free shipping.
The line features the Mummy from The Curse of the Mummy’s Tomb, Slappy from Night of the Living Dummy, Carly Beth from The Haunted Mask, Mud Monster from You Can’t Scare Me, and the Scarecrow from The Scarecrow Walks at Midnight.
Each 5″ scale toy comes with a trading card featuring its respective book cover art on a display stand. Collect all five to build a bonus Curly the skeleton figure.
Alien: Romulus Vinyl from Mutant
Alien: Romulus’ soundtrack is available on vinyl for $40 from Mutant. Shipping in November, the score is composed by Benjamin Wallfisch (It, Blade Runner 2049).
The 2xLP is pressed on 140-gram colored vinyl. It’s housed in a gatefold jacket featuring artwork by Kilian Eng and liner notes by director Fede Álvarez.
Ninja Turtles x Universal Monsters Figures from NECA
NECA is giving four of its Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles x Universal Monsters action figures a black-and-white makeover, evoking the classic movies from which the monsters originate.
The set includes Raphael as Frankenstein’s Monster, Michelangelo as The Mummy, Donatello as The Invisible Man, and Leonardo as the Creature from the Black Lagoon.
Each 7″ scale toy comes with loaded with interchangeable parts and accessories. Shipping in September, the four-pack costs $147.99.
Dark Night of the Scarecrow 1 & 2 on 4K UHD from VCI
1981 made-for-TV cult classic Dark Night of the Scarecrow and its 2022 sequel, Dark Night of the Scarecrow 2, are being released together on 4K Ultra HD. Bubba’s back on September 10 via VCI Entertainment.
Dark Night of the Scarecrow is directed by Frank De Felitta and written by J.D. Feigelson. Larry Drake, Charles Durning, Tonya Crowe, Jocelyn Brando, and Lane Smith.
Feigelson returned to write and direct Dark Night of the Scarecrow 2. The sequel stars Amber Wedding, Aiden Shurr, Carol Dines, Adam Snyder, and Tim Gooch star.
Special features include: new commentaries on the original film by Feigelson and film historians Heath Holland, Robert Kell, and Amanda Reyes; commentary by De Felitta and Feigelson; Bubba Didn’t Do It: 30 Years of the Scarecrow featurette; Frightfest 2011 cast reunion Q&A; vintage promos; and photo gallery.
