I just bought my first pair of trainers in about five years and I’m more excited about wearing them that I thought I’d be. Unsurprisingly, I opted for a pair of Adidas Sambas but, when they arrived, I had a mild panic. How do you style trainers in 2024? As someone who rotates between a capsule of minimal, black leather boots in the winter, loafers in spring and autumn, and simple slider sandals come summer, I had all but forgotten how to make trainers work in my wardrobe. So, I did the natural thing and went straight to Instagram and TikTok, on the hunt for some trainer styling inspo. And, go figure, everyone’s wearing their trainers with trousers right now.
Of course, trousers and trainers go hand-in-hand as a foolproof outfit combination. Still, seeing as trousers are probably the most amenable item in terms of matching up with footwear, you would have thought the shoe options would be more varied. But no, it seems everyone is wearing their trousers exclusively with trainers at the moment. Keen to get this pairing right and coordinate it with pieces I already own, I began saving down my favourite trouser and trouser outfits as I found them. Below are nine I think showcase the combination at its best.

My colleagues have told me how brilliant these faux leather trousers are. These won’t hang around for long. Style Notes: Is there anything more low-key than jeans and trainers? Add a checked blazer into the mix for an elevated finish. This will make any outfit look more expensive. Kendall Jenner owns these exact jeans. Net-a-Porter is receiving more stock of these any day now. Style Notes: Minimalists will love this combination of a grey blazer, white wide-leg trousers and a pair of plain white kicks. This went straight into my basket. As did these. You’ll be hard pressed to find an outfit these don’t go with. Style Notes: All-grey outfits are key this season, but a pair of grey trainers will work well, whatever you pair them with. Tick off another major trend with some pinstripe strides. This looks just as sleek belted. The perfect amount of slouch. These look great with blue denim too. Style Notes: Give breezy pyjama-style trousers more structure with a pair of chunky trainers and a slick tailored blazer.The wool-blend material will keep you extra toasty. A great jogger alternative. Veja kicks are beloved by Emma Watson and Meghan Markle. Style Notes: The ultimate London-girl outfit—a trench coat, tailored trousers and Converse. Tick, tick and tick. H&M always delivers when it comes to trench coats. M&S does it again!These will never go out of style. Style Notes: We can’t talk trainers and not mention leggings. No longer just for working out in, this duo is the epitome of the fashion-person-running-errands look. So chic (especially with gold-tone accessories). Varley leggings are trending big time on TikTok. The navy trimming is a softer alternative to black.
